Kaashidhoo is one of the inhabited islands of Kaafu Atoll. It is 2.825 km long and 1.025 km wide and is 86.42 km (54 mi; 47 nmi) north of the country's capital, Malé City. It is located at the northern tip of Malé atoll and is the fifth biggest island in the entire Maldivian archipelago. Rich in coconut trees, Kaashidhoo is a farming community. It is home to a population of about 2440 people. Although the local language is Dhivehi, many can also speak in English. The island has 4 hotels, 5 restaurants, 26 local shops, and 2 domestic transfer operators. It also has a hospital, a police station and an ATM. The Kaashidu Kandu, also known as 'Kardiva Channel' is the broad channel separating some of the central atolls of Maldives. It has been a famous shipping route since anciet times and has appeared in old French maps as 'Courant de Caridoue'. In addition to this, the largest pre-Islamic remnants ever found in Maldives - parts of a Buddhist Monastery that existed in the 7th and 8th Centuries AD was uncovered on Kaashidhoo.
