Huraa is one of the inhabited islands of Kaafu Atoll. It is 0.850 km long and 0.300 km wide and is 20.42 km (13 mi; 11 nmi) northeast of the countrys capital, Malé City. Huraa has a unique mangrove swamp located to the north of the island, declared protected nature reserve. Its environment with its unique vegetation provide safe resting place for species of protected birds. Huraa is home to a population of about 1163 people. Although the local language is Dhivehi, many can also speak in English. ((The island has 12 hotels, XXX restaurants, XXX diving center, XXX local shops, and XXX domestic transfer operators. It also has a hospital, a police station and an ATM)). The people of the island are engaged mainly in fishing and tourism related activities. The island also has a rich historical background as the last royal dynasty to rule over Maldives has its root in Huraa founded in 1759 by Sultan Al-Ghaazi Hassan Izzaddeen. A mosque built by him on the island that still stands today.
