Dhigurah is an inhabited island of Alif Dhaal (Southern Ari) Atoll. Dhigurah (literally translats to long island) is 3.175 km long and 0.275 km wide, which makes Dhigurah the longest island of Maldives. It is located 96.8 km (61.1 mi) from the countrys capital, Malé City. Dhigurah is a fishing community with a population of about 653 inhabitants who are engaged in fishing, woodworking and boat building. Although the local language is Dhivehi, most people can also speak English. This island has 14 hotels, 5 restaurants, a dive center, a few shops, a health centre, a police station and 2 domestic transfer operators. However, there is no ATM yet. The general population resides in in the head part of the island (about 500 meters). The remaining 2.5 kilometers is occupied by the equatorial forest. On both sides of the island is a beach, which has got a world wide award for best beach Dhigurah’s beach, which is ranked at 34, (FlightNetwork — Canada’s largest online travel website, 2017). Dhigurah is officially marked with more than 30 diving-points. This is one of the few places in the world where you can see a large number of whale sharks (harmless to humans as they only eat planctons), rare sea turtles, giant rays (manta rays), colorful fishes and colorful congestions of coral reefs at arms length.
