Maalhos is one of the inhabited islands of Ari Atoll. It is about 0.975 km long and 0.375 km wide and is 90.28 km (56 mi; 49 nmi) west of the countrys capital, Malé City. Maalhos is the western most island of the Maldives. It is a lush island known for its fertile soil and the tradition of cultivating medicinal herbs as well as the women of the island who are well known for their handcraft of weaving palm thatch roofing, used at the nearby resorts. Maalhos is home to a population of about 730 people. Although the local language is Dhivehi, many can also speak in English. The island has 02 hotels, 02 restaurants, 05 local shops, and 02 domestic transfer operators. The island also has a Health Centre and a pharmacy. Some archaeological remains from the Maldivian Buddhist period were also discovered on the island including a small Stupa. Fairly new to the business of local tourism the island has only one guesthouse making it the ideal location for those who enjoy their peace and quiet.
